There are many temples of Lord Subramanya, also known as Lord Karthikeya, son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, in the South. The Shri Ghati Subramanya Swamy Temple is perhaps the only one where Subramanya and Narasimha exist together. The temple is over 600 years old. The belief is that the Ghorpade rulers of Sandur built the temple. The idol, ‘swayambhu’ or self-manifested’ was unearthed after the Lord instructed the king, in his dreams, to do so.

Architecture

The temple structure, built in Dravidian style, has the outer structure replete with small sculptures from mythology and looks colourful. Both idols in Ghati Subramanya Swamy Temple Karnataka are carved from the same stone. Lord Subramanya faces east and Lord Narasimha to the west. A mirror, strategically placed behind the Subramanya idol, helps the devotees see both the deities at the same time. There are also idols of Vasuki, the king of serpents and Adi Shesha in the temple. A huge single pillar called as ‘Garuda Stambha’ stands in the middle of the main temple premise.

Popular Legends

As per a legend in Sthala Purana, Lord Subramanya once was performing penance in the mountain ranges of Ghati in the form of a snake. He prayed to Lord Narasimha to protect the snake clan from Garuda. Known to be a nemesis of snakes, the Garuda is also the vehicle of Lord Vishnu. Another legend says that the name of the temple comes from the killing of Ghatikasura, a demon harassing the saints in the region.

Shri Ghati Subramanya Swamy Temple is located at a distance of around 60 km from Bengaluru, the state capital. You will need to take the Doddaballapura route to reach the temple. The nearest airport is Bengaluru airport. The nearest railway station is Oddarahalli Railway station, located around 8.2 km away.  Buses are available from all parts of the state to the Ghati.
